Today, alongside the existing 42 mm diameter Pelagos models (the Pelagos, Pelagos LHD, and Pelagos FXD), Tudor announced a new smaller Pelagos.
As the name suggests, the new Tudor Pelagos 39, features a 39 mm diameter case, which Tudor says is 11.8 mm in thickness, so it’s quite a bit thinner than the thick case of the Black Bay Pro they introduced earlier this year.
Like the Black Bay Pro, the hours are marked by luminescent ceramic composite monobloc hour markers, which are sporty and performance-focused compared to the metal surrounds found on Rolex Submariners or Tudor Black Bays that have a more elegant aesthetic.
Along with the new satin matte-finished grade 2 titanium case, the black rotating dive bezel insert is made of scratch-resistant ceramic that has a brushed sunburst finish to match the black sunburst dial and is illuminated with X1 luminous dive markings. Tudor kept the signature Snowflake hands, found across its entire range, which is matched to the blue-glowing lume found on the bezel and hour markers.
As with existing Pelagos models, the titanium bracelet offers the Tudor “T-fit” advanced rapid adjustment system on the clasp, which allows for 8 mm increments, and a diver’s extension that can extend up to 25 mm. Each Pelagos comes with an additional black rubber strap, with an integrated titanium end link on each side that makes the fit with the case seamless, and a grade 2 titanium clasp, as well as a rubber extension piece that can lengthen the strap by 110 mm.
Underneath the dial is Tudor’s caliber MT5400 automatic movement — which also powers some of the Black Bay Fifty-Eight collection, such as the Fifty-Eight 18K — is COSC chronometer certified (not METAS-certified), with a silicon balance spring and a 70-hour power reserve. Perhaps most notably, and similar to the Pelagos FXD, there’s no date window. Although, the FXD has a larger case and therefore uses the MT5602, not the smaller MT5400 that powers the new Pelagos 39.
The Tudor Pelagos 39 has a locking crown and superior water resistance capabilities, however, unlike the standard 42 mm Pelagos, which was last updated in 2015, and has a depth rating of 500 meters, the rating on this new Pelagos 39 is 200 meters.
Consumers who have long wanted a more wearable Pelagos, that better resembles a Submariner, will likely not care about the reduced depth rating, considering the aesthetic is now more in line with what they’ve been wanting, and besides 200 meters is more than enough, even for professional use.
