Founded in 1998, Nixon is a “premium lifestyle accessory brand of choice for independents, creatives, and free-thinkers the world over.”
What co-founders Chad DiNenna and Andy Laats started in Encinitas, California as a boutique line of watches exclusively sold at board sports and fashion retailers is now a full range of watches, bags, leather goods, and accessories.
In 2021, Nixon launched a skeletonized timepiece within its automatic wristwatch lineup called: the Spectra. The Spectra collection is currently available in four different variations, including the black ion-plated model pictured above.
The Spectra Black Gold is presented in a 40 mm x 12.95 mm (45 mm lug-to-lug) stainless steel case that’s been gold-plated, with a black dial and matching applied gold-plated indices. In the center of the dial is a cut-out that offers a view of its Japanese-made Miyota movement.
The Spectra Black Gold comes on a 20 mm wide gold-plated five-link stainless steel bracelet with a double locking deployant clasp and four micro-adjustments. With the bracelet, the total weight of the watch is 135 grams, which is relatively light.
The automatic movement is manufactured in Japan by Miyota, which is a reliable watch movement maker owned by the Citizen group. This particular movement has materials that have been removed (skeletonized) from the mainplate and other components — visible on the dial side — offering a view into the mechanics.
Using a screw-in caseback, as well as gaskets on the front, back, and crown, Nixon has created a sporty watch that’s water-resistant to a depth of 100 meters. The dial is protected by a slightly domed sapphire crystal.
Visible through the open caseback, you can see the skeletonized tungsten rotor, which automatically winds the mainspring based on the movements of your wrist. This is a premium automatic Miyota caliber 82S0 which has 21 jewels, a 40-hour power reserve and drives the hours, minutes, and center seconds.
The Nixon Spectra Black Gold (Ref. A1323-010-00) retails for $375, and there are three other variations available.
