Omega’s latest X-33 watch uses Omega caliber 5622, which is a highly accurate thermo-compensated Swiss quartz movement that powers both digital and analog displays. Special functions were developed, tested, and qualified by the ESA. The analog functions include hours, minutes, and seconds. The digital functions include the ability to track time zones and the date on both Earth and Mars. The Mars functions can track the rover’s mission on the red planet, while the addition of a solar compass allows the watch to find true north on Earth and Mars. Also included are traditional Speedmaster Skywalker X-33 functions, such as MET (Mission Elapsed Time), PET (Phase Elapsed Time), alarms, and a perpetual calendar. The battery is rated for 24 months.

Omega says that the watch was developed to assist scientists by offering a range of valuable tools for those working in the field of space research, so even if there are no plans to travel to Mars anytime soon, the watch will see professional use in the meantime.

Developed under an ESA patented license, the caliber 5622’s most unique function, called the MTC function, allows the wearer to track Mars’ sol date and time at the prime meridian, allowing for the fact that a day on Mars is 39 minutes longer than on Earth. As mentioned above, there’s also an innovative solar compass, to find true north on planet Earth and Mars.

“In keeping with OMEGA’s take on professional watches, it also performs its tasks in style. Its classic black dial provides a contrasting backdrop for the multiple analog and digital readings made even clearer by Earth and Mars symbols to distinguish which particular functions are in use. Circling the dial is an oxalic anodized aluminum bezel ring in red hematite color, reminiscent of Mars’ distinctive dust. This striking shade is also present on the second hand, which has a black to red hematite gradient, a design code to signal an OMEGA’s status as a professional instrument,” according to Omega.

The caseback is embossed in the center with Omega’s Speedmaster wording and the Seahorse logo. Circled by the words “SPEEDMASTER X-33 MARSTIMER, ESA TESTED AND QUALIFIED.”

A depth rating of 30 meters allows the watch to perform, even in wet conditions. A strap changing tool is included with the full kit, as well as a watch roll that has a nod to the red planet on its inner lining: a reproduction of Hebes Chasma, a unique steep-sided canyon on the surface of Mars.
